Where is Technopark located? How accessible is it from the nearest airport?

Technopark is located in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state in India, which is one of the most beautiful states in India with high literacy levels and excellent quality of life.

The park is on the National Highway (NH 47) to Ernakulam, adjacent to the University of Kerala's Kariavattom campus and is about 8 kms from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is well connected to all the Gulf Destinations and Singapore. Technopark is also well connected by road to other commercial urban centers. The Cochin Sea Port is about 200 kms away from the campus.

The internationally renowned beach Kovalam is just half an hour drive from Technopark.

Reliable, stable power for the companies of Technopark is being supplied through a dedicated 110 KV substation in the campus and distributed through a network of 11KV substations in the campus. Technopark is a licensee for distribution of power in the Campus.

What types of companies are located in Technopark?

Mostly joint ventures and subsidiaries of foreign companies engaged in a wide variety of activities which include embedded software development, smart card technology, ERP, process control software design, engineering CAD software development, IT enabled services, reengineering, animation and E-business. Currently, four CMM level 5 companies, two CMM level 3 companies and several ISO 9001 companies operate out of Technopark. Most of the companies have their base in Europe, North America, South East Asia and the Middle East.

What are the clearances required for starting an operation?

Absolutely no State Government clearance for a software unit. From the Government of India, you may need foreign investment clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board. You may also need STP (Software Technology Park) registration, if you are planning a 100% Export Oriented Unit (EOU). Both these can be organized easily.

If we ship computers and equipment directly to Technopark, is there any duty or taxes we have to pay to the customs or to Government of India?

A 100% export oriented unit (EOU) need not pay any duty. Imports are duty free. Otherwise duty depends on the items imported, and will be about 35%. A 100% EOU also enjoys income tax exemption.

How will I go about registering a company in India?

Company registration can be done with the Registrar of Companies, that has an office in Cochin. A chartered accountant can do the same.

What are the different steps involved in getting started?

Step 1. Have a Chartered Accountant immediately do the company formation for your activity in India. For foreign companies, establishing a subsidiary is the recommended route.

Step 2. Complete the formalities of Foreign Investment Promotion Board/Software Technology Park registrations.

Step 3. Sign up for space in Technopark.

Step 4. Do up the interiors, complete recruitment and commence operations. The whole job can be entrusted to Venture Management experts. Most of the existing companies have done this.

Is land available for lease in Technopark so that a company can construct its own building?

Developed plots in multiples of half acres are available in the campus. Only well established and reputed non polluting Information Technology related projects would be leased out land in the campus. The following are the indicative guidelines.

The company will have to put up minimum built-up area of 10,000 sq.ft. for every half acre of allotted land. The setbacks would be as per the specification in the building codes for construction within Technopark.

No overhead lines shall be permitted within the campus. Only underground/radio services shall be permitted. The company should pay the stipulated rent for the use of ducts/underground lines.

Power shall be supplied only at 11 KV and the cost of cabling from the nearest substation to the respective plot shall be borne by the company. The minimum contract demand is 100 KVA.
